FLCN Negotiations Office Environmental Research
Assistant
Under the parameters and principals of the Fox Lake Cree Nation the Environmental Research Assistant will possess a relevant university degree or a suitable combination of work experience and post secondary education. He/she must possess excellent writing and research skills and the ability to liaise between the Fox Lake Cree Nation membership and the Fox Lake Negotiations Office. The successful applicant will have a superior knowledge of current practices in the gathering, recording and application of local and traditional knowledge. Experience in land use planning, GIS, and conducting community consultations are definite assets.
The Environmental Research Assistant will work under the direction of the Keeyask Environment and Resource Manager and will:
Work with community members in recording and reporting on local and traditional knowledge;
Write proposals and developing programs related to the mitigation of anticipated impacts of hydro development;
Advise the Cree Nation on strategies for environmental and cultural protection and related matters;
Work in close communication and consultation with designated community advisors;
The Environmental Research Assistant must be dependable, able to work under minimal supervision, of good moral character; willing to travel; and committed to assisting Fox Lake in its endeavours towards achieving a healthy and sustainable community.
The Environmental Research Assistant must have an excellent understanding of:
Gathering, recording and application of local and traditional knowledge;
Recording of local and traditional knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
Aboriginal and environmental issues as they pertain to Fox Lake and the proposed projects in Fox Lake’s Traditional Territory (including, but not limited to Keeyask, Conawapa, and BiPole III);
Natural resource issues in relation to Treaty and Aboriginal rights;
Regulatory issues related to environmental impact assessment;
Priority will be given to qualified Aboriginal applicants. Fluency in Cree is a major asset.

Position Summary:
The Community Health Representative will be under the general guidance and direction of the Health Director. The CHR will be directly responsible to the Health Director on matters relating to the operation of his/her program. The activities of the CHR will be planned and implemented in consultation with the Community Health Nurse.
Skills and Responsibilities:
Make home visits to pregnant mothers, mothers with infants and young children, and preventative practices, including prenatal and child care, nutrition, family planning, healthy lifestyle, good hygiene and sanitation, communicable diseases, dental care, mental health, alcohol and drug abuse, etc.
Instruct and educate prenatal and new mothers with respect to body changes, diet, exercise, medical care, breast feeding and newborn care.
Instruct household members on emergency care and treatment, in case of accidents and in home nursing care for the sick and aged.
Assist with homes and personal situations by listening and providing assistance with health-related problems, by counseling, advising and referring them for further help or treatment when required.
Work with the Community Health Nurse and/or Physician to obtain and correct personal health histories of Band Members.
Record the weight, height, temperature, pulse and blood pressure of individual Band Members when indicated.
Provide information and advice to Band Members regarding available Health and Social Services.
Obtain water samples for analysis when requested by Band Members or when indicated for safe health practices. Record the results of the analysis in the appropriate file and inform the household of results.
Provide emergency first aid when required.
Knowledge of issues related to confidentiality, client rights, and ethics
Must be willing to Participate in ongoing training opportunities
Knowledge of Microsoft office will be beneficial
A valid class 5 license will be considered an asset

Strong organizational and time management skills a must
Strong interpersonal and excellent communication skills, including the ability to make presentations, speak publicly and conduct meetings
Excellent computer skills and knowledge of various computer software, MS Word, Excel, Windows
Ability to perform management leadership and delegation, achieve objective and goals of the Fox Lake Cree Nation, and work efficiently and effectively with the employees and members of the community
