The Keeyask generation site is being studied for possible hydroelectric development. Keeyask would be located in the Split Lake Resource Management Area:
- 725 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg on the lower Nelson River, and
- 35 kilometres upstream of the existing Kettle Generating Station, where Gull Lake flows into Stevens Lake.

A Joint Keeyask Development Agreement (JKDA) was officially signed on May 29, 2009.
The JKDA outlines the partnership arrangements for First Nations’ participation in the development of the Keeyask Generating Station. The signing does not guarantee Keeyask will be built. No decision has been made to go forward with development of this project, and no application has yet been made for regulatory review or approval.
We have also signed an Adverse Effects Agreement (AEA) with each of the First Nations partners:
- Fox Lake Cree Nation AEA (open new window)
- Tataskweyak Cree Nation AEA (open new window)
- War Lake First Nation AEA (open new window)
- York Factory First Nation AEA (open new window)
These Adverse Effects Agreements identify potential negative impacts of the Keeyask Project, and outline measures to prevent or reduce these effects. Where adverse effects cannot be avoided, offsetting measures will be pursued or compensation will be provided.
If developed, the Keeyask project would be the 4th largest of our current generating stations.
